Nancy’s Profile & Contact Details

Nancy, you are new to hosting, what made you decide to become a host family to foreign students?
I decided to become a host family because I have two cousins who do it and highly recommend it. Sounds like an interesting endeavour, I love learning about different cultures, that’s always been fascinating for me which is why I choose to live near a large multi-cultural city. Thought it would be good way to use my house for helping others and at the same time helping myself.

Where do you live, please describe your area in detail and what you can do and see in your region.
I live just 30 minutes from the city of Toronto and 75 minutes from Niagara Falls. My home is in a very convenient area, close to all amenities. There are many parks and walking trails and the lake is a 10 minute ride. There is a University of Toronto campus just a 5 minute drive from my house. My neighbourhood is a middle class, quiet and safe area. There are many restaurants, shops and everything a city has to offer, including many tourist sites such as the CN tower, the Rogers Centre, Skydome, Niagara Falls and much more to see.

Describe yourself, your work, what you enjoy doing.
I am very young at heart, love anything adventurous, love to hike, bike, swim in the lakes and do almost anything outdoors. I also enjoy theatre and movies and going out to dinner or Sunday brunch with friends. I love exploring new places, whether it be surrounding towns or out of province places.

I work with adolescents in a youth centre who have mental heath concerns, my hours are during the day usually 9-5.

What type of accommodation are you offering, meals etc?
My accommodations consist of 3 meals per/day with a home cooked dinner every night. I have a 4-5 bedroom house with 5 bathrooms, a finished basement with a large recreation room with a large screen t.v.

What would be your perfect way of spending a weekend with a foreign student?
My perfect way of spending a week-end would be one of the following:

1.Going away to a friend’s cottage and enjoying the beach during the day, some great food and maybe a drive in theatre at night. Also a nice walk on the beach or shopping in the down-town area, checking out the flea markets, or any festivals that maybe going on in town.

2.Visiting Niagara Falls and enjoying all the surrounding things there are to see.

3.Going out for a great hike with some great scenic look-outs or checking out all the waterfalls on the hiking trail, especially in the Hamilton area which is known as the waterfall capital of the world. Having a packed lunch or a pic-nic to enjoy. Coming home to relax with a nice movie with lots of junk food to accompany it.

4.Take a nice bike ride on one of our nearby trails or parks. Go out for a burger or meal. Maybe go to a show at night or whatever else such as a festival etc that maybe going on the area.

5.Going to the famous Bon-Homme carnival in Quebec and spending the week-end enjoying all the festivities as well as touring to Old Quebec to take in the shops and restaurants, beautiful cathedrals. As well as go ski-doing on the famous Mount St Anne.

6.In winter I enjoy going cross country skiing and being amazed at hoe beautifully laden with snow our trees are and the stillness of the woods. Also love to go tobogganing and have hot chocolate and some special treats. Maybe a horse drawn sleigh ride with songs and friends.

7. Checking out the scenic caves in Collingwood and doing some Tree-trecking and maybe a adventurous Hummer ride as well as taking in all the sites in the area.
