Gloucester is a cathedral city set on a flat piece of land on the River Severn which is the longest river in the United Kingdom, flowing from Ceredigion in Wales out to the mouth which is the Severn Estuary, Bristol Channel with Henry II granting its first charter in 1155. Gloucester is situated on the Welsh border and the landscape reflects this.

Founded in AD 97 by the Romans, the city has much of interest historically and architecturally to enjoy and is a great place to stay as a foreign language student while learning English with a homestay host family.

Gloucester Cathedral should be included in a language students itinerary as a ‘must see’ while visiting a host family homestay in Gloucester. Originating around 678 or 679 with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter (later dissolved by King Henry VIII) the Cathedral has a stained glass window with the earliest known depictions of golf! Also a carved picture of people playing a ball game, is commonly understood to be depicting medieval football.

There are many other places of interest to visit around Gloucester. For students who like horses, visit HorseWorld and support them with a donation. HorseWorld rescue neglected horses and where possible, restore them to health and if possible, loan them out again for their retirement.

For the ‘boys’ among the foreign students, a visit to The Cotsworlds Motoring Museum is of value.

The museum is located in the picturesque village of Bourton on the Water not far from Gloucester. The Cotswold Motoring Museum describes itself as ‘a fascinating journey through the 20th Century.’
